I Would Have Asked… (for dVerse)

https://dversepoets.com/2024/04/16/dverse-poetics-maggie-smith-and-conversational-mode-of-address/

I don’t know if I’ve come even close to satisfying the instructions for this poetic form…but this is what I’ve got:

I would have asked

“Why couldn’t you love me?”

But you were silent

Perhaps distracted…

I would have said

“Please look at me

With tenderness and

Not mute scorn

Please don’t ignore…”

I would have begged

“Why could we never

Have connected

Just one time

For single day?”

But you were far

Uncaring distance

Heart needed

Longed too much…

Now you both have gone

 I don’t know, somewhere

One I’ve most forgotten

The other heart cannot–

You live in hidden dreams

Where candle ne’er goes out

~~*~~

My box was made with

Wood, thin straps of leather, brass

Painted entire of

Black…if anyone should ask

And came to me as surprise

~

Imagination’s

Wealth buried in dust, box holds

Private backstory

Dream-Life I lived sustained soul

Soothing cursed Reality

~

This box rests near, ‘neath

Window…where sunshine’s motes fall

Soft when days recall:

What never was, and could ne’er

Have been…breathed for me, alive

Too Late to Change the Past (for dVerse prosery)

https://dversepoets.com/2024/04/08/prosery-amy-woolard/

Dora from PilgrimDreams.com is hosting the prosery prompt at dVerse.  Click the link above for all the details.  Dora has chosen this line from a poem by Amy Woolard as the prompt:  “What does it matter That the stars we see are already dead.”

~♥~

“What does it matter, that the stars we see are already dead?” she asked softly.

“I’ve disappointed you,” he responded.  “I never meant to, never wanted to–I thought surely I’d made the right decision, for both of us.  I wanted the best for you–good schools, friends your own age, culture, status, a home by the beach…”

She sighed, willed herself not to cry…not now, the air too heavy with an impending rainstorm.

“I won’t ever understand how we were so very close, yet faraway in terms of our future…why our dreams were worlds apart,” she whispered.

He caressed her cheek, listening–she was exquisitely beautiful, her eyes the same dark pools he’d fallen into forty years ago.

“I was happy, then–life was simple, I lacked nothing…you were the center of my every day.  You painted a lie, saying our new life would be safer–a LIE.”

Click the link above for information on participating in the dVerse Quadrille Monday prompt…the prompt word is:  CONTOUR

♥♥♥♥♥

Contours of his heart

Sculpted in unforgotten face

Cheekbones’ perfect planes above

Love’s lips precisely drawn

Squared jawline: complex thoughts

Played within each clenching…

How she longed to

Smooth brow…but blue

horizon’s distance painted his

Eyes…conveyed treacherous shoreline

She would never traverse
